Rosaries have long been a central part of Catholic contemplative practice. Although there are a number of different prayers that can be used with the rosary, the most common practice consists of a series of recitations of the Lord’s Prayer, followed by the Hail Mary and the Glory Be to the Father prayers.Every iteration of this cycle is known as a rosary decade. During each decade prayer series, Catholic believers contemplate one of the Mysteries of the Rosary, which focus on different aspects of the lives and tribulations of Jesus and Mary. The four series of Mysteries associated with the rosary are the joyful mysteries, the sorrowful mysteries, the glorious mysteries, and the optional luminous mysteries, which Pope John Paul II instituted in 2002.Because of their importance in Catholic life, rosaries are often gifted to believers to commemorate occasions such as First Communion, Confirmation, a wedding, a birthday, or another special event.
