St. Gabriel of The Blessid VirginFrancesco Possenti was born in Assisi on March 1, 1838. He was a brilliant student, popular and outgoing; after graduating from the Jesuit college at Spoleto he entered the Passionist order, receiving the habit in September 1856 and taking the name of Gabriel of Our Lady of Sorrows. He began his studies for the priesthood, excelling in all his work, but remaining always modest and humble. He observed the rule exactly and was known for his cheerfulness. Gabriel was deeply devoted the Passion of Jesus, the Blessed Sacrament, and the Sorrowful Mother. He died of tuberculosis on February 27, 1862 and was canonized in May of 1920. He is a patron of modern youth, especially young religious. The feast of St. Gabriel of Our Lady Sorrows is May 31. |
