St. RonanTwelve Irish saints are named Ronan. St. Ronan of Ulster was a grandson of Loarn and the brother of St. Carnech; he died January 11, 535. St. Ronan the son of Berach was the first Abbot of Drumshallon and was a disciple of St. Fechin of Fore; Ronan the son of Berach died November 18, 665. St. Ronan Fionn is the patron of Lan Ronan in Iveagh and his feast is on May 22. St. Bede wrote about St. Ronan of Iona, who upheld the custom of celebrating Easter on the date that the Church in Rome celebrated it, while other Irish prelates wanted to celebrate Easter on the day it was traditionally celebrated in the Irish Church. In 664 the Synod of Whitby, upheld St. Ronan of Iona’s opinion. St. Ronan of Lismore was a successor of St. Carthage, bishop of Lismore; Ronan of Lismore died February 9, 763. There are several other saints named Ronan, but the ones listed are the most well-known. |
