St. Victor of MarseillesA legend recounts that Victor, a Roman soldier stationed at Marseilles was tried before the prefects Eutychius and Asterius because he was encouraging Christians to remain faithful and refuse to sacrifice to the gods in honor of the Emperor Maximian when he visited the area. The two prefects sent Victor to be tried before the emperor who ordered him dragged through the streets, tortured, and imprisoned. He converted three guards while he was in prison. The guards, Felician, Alexander, and Longinus were beheaded for their newly proclaimed faith and Victor was tortured again. He was executed by being crushed in a millstone and then beheaded after he would not offer incense to Jupiter. St. Victor of Marseilles’ feast is July 21. His tomb became a very popular shrine. |
