One day, while Saint Francis of Assisi prayed at the abandoned, rundown church in nearby San Damiano, the icon of Christ crucified suddenly came alive, speaking, "Francis, Go, rebuild My Church, which as you can see, is in ruins!" Inflamed with a burning love, Francis began to repair the church of San Damiano, but later realized that God was calling him to restore the whole Church, the Body of Christ.
The San Damiano icon cross was painted to teach the meaning of Christ's saving death and Resurrection. This icon, like all others, is a "window to heaven" which helps us encounter, by grace, our God who loves us unconditionally and who calls each of us to build up His Body on earth.
PRAYER BEFORE A CRUCIFIX
